Grow Shetland Workshops & Training Courses

A new series of workshops will run in February and March 2026. Workshops are stand alone, however, all taken together give a good overview for successful vegetable growing in Shetland.

This year we have added another new workshop looking at how to grow organically and do No Dig in Shetland. Both ways of growing are useful for building healthy soil, increasing biodiversity and reducing carbon emmisions.

Workshops are online via Zoom and run for approx 1 hour with time for Q&A afterwards.

Getting Started 

Choosing where to grow;  the difference between containers/pots, raised beds and ground level plots. Understanding soil, soil health and improvement. Buying seeds and transplants.

Making it Work

How plants grow and develop. Crop rotation, bed preparation, seed sowing and transplanting. When to harvest.

Growing Undercover 

The impact of the polycrub/tunnel or greenhouse environment on plant growth and health. Watering, ventilation. Problems and solutions

Composting  

A little bit of science behind making compost. Choosing your container and site. What/what not to compost. Problems and solutions

Organic Growing & Using No Dig 

Simple organic priciples and how to apply them in practice. No Dig, what is it and how to get started. Alternatives to bulk green waste compost

Pests, Diseases and Weeds 

Identification and the best way to deal with them to have healthy productive crops

Extending the Season 

Choosing crops, planning and timings for growing through the winter. Have edibles available all year

 

Workshops to suit you

We are able to run workshops for you if you have a group of 3 or more people who would like to attend. This can be online or here at Turriefield. We also offer bespoke face ot face workshops for 6-20 people at your chosen venue

Turriefield Site Visits
